WRS - History

The Call for Papers of RTA 2001 (Utrecht, The Netherlands, June 2001) offered the possibility of submitting proposals of affiliated workshops. Two different and independent proposals of workshops centered on strategies were submitted.

The two proposals were:

  • Reduction Strategies in Programming Languages, by María Alpuente and Salvador Lucas (from the Universidad Politénica de Valencia, Spain) and the acronym WSPL was proposed to designate it, and
  • Strategies in Rewriting, by Bernhard Gramlich (from TU Wien, Austria) and Vincent van Oostrom (from Utrecht University, The Netherlands).

The RTA'01 Program Committe suggested to merge both proposals into a single one. After discussing about the new format of the workshop, there was an agreement in choosing

Reduction Strategies in Rewriting and Programming

as the definitive name of the workshop, and

WRS

as an appropriate acronym.

Thus, the history of the workshop nicely shows that the topic was hot enough to inspire two different proposals at the same time!
